Deputy Chairman of Russia's Security Council Dmitry Medvedev defined the protests in Georgia against the freezing of negotiations for membership in the European Union as an “revolutionary attempt”, reports BTA.
According to Medvedev, the country is „moving quickly along the Ukrainian road to the dark abyss” and predicts that such processes usually “end very badly”.
His statement was published on his official channel in “Telegram” in the context of the ongoing instability in Georgia.
Political crisis and clashes between institutions
At the same time, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said that President Salome Zurabishvili will be forced to leave her post after her term expires. This statement came in response to the position of Zurabishvili, who refused to hand over his post, saying that the newly elected parliament was “illegitimate” and has no right to choose her successor.
This conflict between the prime minister and the president highlights the deepening political crisis in the country.
Freeze negotiations with the EU
Georgia fell into serious political turbulence after the ruling party “Georgian Dream” announced on Thursday that it was freezing European Union accession talks for the next four years. The decision caused violent public reactions and mass protests, while opposition forces warned of the risk of isolating the country.
Kobahidze: “The strategic partnership with the USA will be restored“
Regarding international relations, Prime Minister Kobakhidze called the US decision to end the strategic partnership with Georgia a “temporary event”. He expressed hope that the dialogue will resume with the new administration of President Donald Trump, which will take office in January.
With a population of 3.8 million people and a strategic location between Europe and Asia, Georgia faces serious challenges. Freezing of negotiations with the EU and tensions with international partners increase the risk of internal destabilization.
