Social Democrats win Iceland's elections, coalition loses majority - 1

In yesterday's early parliamentary elections in Iceland, the Social Democratic Alliance led by Kristrun Frostadottir won the most votes, according to final results cited by Reuters and BTA.

The party received 20.8% of the vote, securing 15 seats in the 63-seat parliament, Icelandic state television reported.

The leader of the Social Democrats, 36-year-old Frostadottir, who took over the party leadership two years ago, campaigned on promises to impose the Scandinavian welfare model. Its main focus was tackling the cost of living crisis caused by high inflation and borrowing costs.

In second place with 19.4% of the votes remained the Independence Party, led by the former Prime Minister Bjarni Benediktsson. The Liberal Renewal Party took third place with 15.8%.

Losses for the Left Green Movement

Former coalition partner and center-left formation, Left Green Movement, failed to win a single seat in parliament. The movement's leader, Katrin Jakobsdottir, stepped down as prime minister in April to run for president.

The snap election was prompted by escalating divisions in the ruling coalition, as well as public discontent over issues such as migration, energy policy and housing. These issues dominated the pre-election debate, highlighting the divide among voters.
