Two days after the ceasefire: Israel strikes Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon - 1

The Israeli army announced that it had shelled targets of the Shiite movement "Hezbollah" in southern Lebanon over the past 24 hours, just days after the agreed ceasefire between Israel and the Iran-backed group, Agence France-Presse reported, quoted by BTA.

In a statement, the Israeli armed forces explained that they had acted to "eliminate threats" that violated "the terms of the ceasefire agreement". On Saturday, they identified "several armed terrorists near a church in southern Lebanon that was actively used by "Hezbollah".

"The troops fired at the terrorists and eliminated them", the statement said, adding that when scanning the area, the troops "localized a tunnel shaft containing weapons".

The Lebanese National News Agency (NNA) reported "the continued violation of the ceasefire" in southern Lebanon by Israeli forces on Sunday, and that "enemy warplanes struck" on the border village of Yarun.

Israeli forces also reportedly struck other settlements, including the town of Hiam and the outskirts of Aitarun.

The ceasefire between Israel and "Hezbollah" came into effect last Wednesday after the two sides agreed to an agreement brokered by the US and France.

Yesterday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that Israel "is strictly adhering to the ceasefire agreement".

Israel is closely monitoring developments in Syria and is ready for any scenario, an Israeli representative told The Times of Israel, quoted by Focus.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held a discussion on the latest developments in the region and plans another meeting next week.

“Israel is ready for any scenario,“ the source stressed, adding that the country remains alert to any escalation.

Negotiations with Russia on arms transfers

In recent talks with Russia, which is a key ally of the Syrian government, Israel has issued a warning about the transfer of weapons through Syrian territory to Lebanon.

“We have made it clear that it is in Russia's interest to stop the movement of weapons through Syria to Lebanon. If this continues, the Israeli army will continue to attack government army targets both on and off the border,” the Israeli official said.

Israel's military actions in Syria

Israel insists it will intensify its strikes if the arms transfers are not stopped.

“We told Russia that if the arms transfers continue, we will attack Syrian army targets more intensively. They should take this into account to ensure the survival of President Bashar al-Assad's government,“ the source added.
