One person killed and four Lebanese soldiers were wounded in an Israeli airstrike in southern Lebanon, the Lebanese army announced today, as quoted by DPA. The strike was carried out at a checkpoint in the city of Bint Jbeil, and the victim was a car driver, the Lebanese Armed Forces specified, quoted by BTA.
There is still no official comment on the attack from the Israeli side.
Meanwhile, Israel reported four of its soldiers killed in fighting in the region. "They fell during combat," the Israeli army said, without providing further information.
Ceasefire violations
The Israeli strike and clashes come as the implementation of a cease-fire agreement reached two weeks ago between Israel and the Iran-backed movement "Hezbollah" has been severely tested.
On Saturday alone, six people were killed in Israeli attacks on two Lebanese villages in the south of the country, according to data from the Lebanese Ministry of Health.
The agreement reached on November 26 provided for "Hezbollah" to withdraw north of the Litani River, and Israeli ground forces to withdraw from Lebanon in stages within 60 days. The Lebanese army is charged with the task of monitoring compliance with the agreed conditions.
Prospects for Peace
Despite efforts to stop the cross-border conflict, which has lasted more than a year, the numerous violations of the truce cast doubt on its sustainability.
Tensions in the region remain high, with the series of incidents raising fears of a further escalation of the conflict.
