Canadian lower house of parliament failed to support for third time the initiative of the opposition Conservative Party of Canada for a vote of no confidence in the Liberal government of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
The initiative was supported by 152 deputies, and 180 were against. In the fall, the Conservatives twice initiated no-confidence motions, but their motion failed both times due to support for Trudeau from some of the opposition parties.
According to the current arrangement of seats in the parliament, the negative scenario for the liberals implies support for the conservative initiative from all opposition forces.
The next parliamentary election in Canada is scheduled for October 2025
Meanwhile, the Canadian government has declared it will respond if US President-elect Donald Trump decides to impose 25% tariffs on all Canadian goods.
This was announced by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, speaking at an event at the Halifax Chamber of Commerce.
"We will respond to unfair tariffs in several ways. We are still looking for the right ways," he said, quoted by Bloomberg.
Trudeau added that the backlash against Trump's decision to impose large tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum during his first term ultimately led to their removal. He also said that tariffs of 25% on all Canadian goods "would be disastrous for the Canadian economy". The US, Canada and Mexico are bound by a trilateral agreement that includes the creation of a free trade area between the countries.
However, on November 25, Trump announced that on his first day as president he would impose a 25% tariff on all goods from Canada and Mexico in connection with illegal immigration and drug smuggling.
