Russian troops have liberated 801 square kilometers of the territory of the Kursk region, or 63.2 percent of the territory initially occupied by the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the Russian Defense Ministry reported, RIA Novosti reports.
"Russian troops continue the offensive in all directions, the enemy is forced to retreat. In two weeks of January, units of the "North" group of troops captured four settlements in the region – Alexandria, Leonidovo, Russkoe Porechno", the statement said.
According to the Russian military department, a counterattack by the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the direction of Berdyn was also repelled.
It is noted that the Armed Forces of Ukraine attempted a counterattack to stop the advance of the Russian troops in the Kursk direction.
"Through joint actions, the "Akhmat" unit of the 42nd Guards Motorized Division and the 106th Guards Airborne Division inflicted significant losses on the Ukrainian Armed Forces, after which the enemy abandoned further actions in this direction and returned to its original positions," the statement added.
