Police monitor the situation outside the Seoul Western District Court, where protests and riots took place over the issuance of an order to extend the detention of South Korean President Yun Suk-yeol.

He was detained early on the morning of January 19 on charges of leading a riot. Supporters of the president entered the building and started a riot in the court, which decided to keep the president in custody. Some tried to find the judges who made the decision. Several police officers were also reported injured.

The president's team said about 100,000 people gathered outside the courthouse, although police said 12,000.

Police deployed about 1,400 officers, including riot police, Yonhap news agency reported. By 6:00 a.m., protesters inside and outside the courthouse had largely been subdued.

By 10:00 a.m., the situation at the Western District Courthouse was calm and under police control.

The overnight riot resulted in 45 arrests on charges of trespassing, bringing the total number of arrests over the two days of protests to 85.
