Who damaged the undersea cables in the Baltic Sea? Germany joins investigation - 1

Germany will participate in the investigation into the latest case of damage to an underwater cable between Sweden and Latvia, a government spokesman in Berlin said today, quoted by DPA, writes.

The spokesman pointed out that Germany is participating in NATO's "Baltic Watch" operation, and said that Berlin is contributing to the investigation.

The operation was approved in Helsinki on January 14th with the aim of protecting critical underwater infrastructure.

"The incident once again shows how vulnerable critical underwater infrastructure is", the spokesman said.

He added that increasing NATO's presence in the region is of fundamental importance to Germany.

A Foreign Ministry spokesman said that the essence of hybrid threats lies in that it is not certain what exactly happened.

Germany has made concrete proposals for the meeting of European Union foreign ministers in Brussels today, where this issue will be discussed.

The speaker mentioned closer cooperation between the EU and NATO and better information exchange.

"We must be aware that these hybrid threats will only increase," he said.
