High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaia Kallas has invited US Secretary of State Marco Rubio to explain her country's position on Greenland to EU foreign ministers, BNR reported.
President Donald Trump insists that it be annexed to the United States and does not even rule out military force for this purpose.
The High Representative quoted the words of a minister of a member state, according to whom what the US president said should not be taken literally. She emphasized:
"I think it is clear to everyone that the new administration speaks the language of transactions. This means negotiating on various issues. We also have to speak this language".
Asked if this means in practice the EU's readiness to negotiate to give Greenland to the US, she replied:
"No, we are not negotiating about Greenland. Of course, we support our member Denmark and its autonomous region of Greenland. However, we must also take into account our strength - we are an economic power, we are very connected to America and this means that we also have something in our hands. And so when someone tells us to do something, it does not mean that we necessarily do it".
At their meeting yesterday, the foreign ministers of the member states also adopted additional sanctions against three officers of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces for a series of cyberattacks against Estonia in 2020. A political agreement was also reached on a roadmap for lifting some of the sanctions against Syria related to its economic recovery.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen is leaving for a tour of Berlin, Paris and Brussels to strengthen European unity in the face of Donald Trump's desire to acquire the island of Greenland, which is an autonomous Danish territory, Agence France-Presse reported, quoted by BTA.
“Europe is in a serious situation. With the war on the continent and with changes in geopolitical realities. In these moments, unity is of key importance“, Frederiksen said, without mentioning the Greenland case.
During her tour, the Danish Prime Minister will talk with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, French President Emmanuel Macron and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.
“Denmark is a small country with strong alliances. And it is part of a strong European community, in which together we can meet the challenges we face,“ said Frederiksen.
Trump has repeatedly spoken of acquiring Greenland, but Greenland has repeatedly said that it is not for sale.
On Sunday, Frederiksen hosted her colleagues from the Scandinavian countries for dinner, who expressed solidarity with Denmark.
The Danish prime minister spoke by phone with Trump in the middle of the month and stressed to him that Greenland is the one who will decide its own future. This conversation, according to sources who spoke to the “Financial Times“, was terrible.
Denmark holds the rotating presidency of the EU in the second half of 2025, recalls Agence France-Presse.
