Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic addressed the nation after taking part in an extraordinary government meeting, NOVA reported.
He said he agreed to both a new government and elections. “In the next 10 days, we will decide whether to organize elections or form a new government. This surprised everyone. We have no candidates“, he added.
Vucic also announced that he would meet the 30-day legal deadline for forming a new government after Prime Minister Miloš Vučević's resignation or call parliamentary elections if he fails.
The president stressed that the situation was “unforeseen” and announced that he would hold talks with all affected parties in the coming days. Ignoring calls for a transitional government, Vucic accused "external factors" of putting additional pressure on the country. "Order will be established in Serbia and we will maintain stability and peace," the head of state promised.
Earlier, the country's Prime Minister Miloš Vučević announced that he was leaving office. The mayor of Novi Sad, Milan Djuric, also resigned.
Meanwhile, new protests took place yesterday evening in Novi Sad, Belgrade and a number of other Serbian cities after the beating on Monday evening of a student who participated in anti-government demonstrations in our western neighbor, BNR reported.
The unrest in Serbia has been going on for three months, since the canopy of the newly renovated train station in the city collapsed, claiming the lives of 15 people.
