An "American Airlines" plane collided with a military "Black Hawk" helicopter over the Potomac River near "Ronald Reagan" airport in downtown Washington last night, Reuters reported, citing officials.
The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said a regional airliner collided in mid-air with the military helicopter during an approach to the airport. A US military official confirmed that one of its helicopters was involved in the crash.
According to the FAA, "American Airlines" flight 5342 took off from Wichita, Kansas, for Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. The plane can carry up to 65 passengers, according to the airline's website. Texas Senator Ted Cruz wrote on social media that "we know there are casualties," but gave no further details.
Washington police said multiple agencies were involved in the rescue operation in the Potomac River, which borders the airport.
Late last night, Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport said all flights to and from the airport were suspended while emergency crews responded to a plane crash.
US President Donald Trump said he had been informed of a "terrible incident."
