The Kremlin said that contacts between the United States and Russia have been established, which have recently intensified - for the first time Moscow has signaled that the two sides are discussing a potential plan to end the fighting in Ukraine, The Wall Street Journal writes, saying that the remarks by Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov were made at a time when both sides are showing an increasing willingness to negotiate to end the war.
It is noted that the Kremlin has repeatedly called Zelensky an “illegitimate president“, but Peskov said that Moscow is ready to communicate with him for the sake of negotiations. Zelensky, in turn, said he was ready to sit down at the negotiating table with Putin.
"The Kremlin's confirmation of the contacts is the first concrete signal of progress in the talks after months of uncertainty about Trump's ability to fulfill his promises. The lack of any confirmed contacts between the two leaders or plans for a meeting that Trump has publicly called for has left observers wondering how quickly any potential talks could begin,“ the article states.
It is important to note that Trump has also shown increasing impatience with Putin. He and his advisers are plotting to force Russia to make concessions by increasing sanctions or lowering the price of Russia's main export, oil.
"If negotiations begin in earnest, both sides will face many thorny issues, including whether Russia will retain all the Ukrainian territories it seized during the fighting and whether Moscow will receive sanctions relief," the journalists write.
It is noted that the future of Ukraine is no less complicated. Questions remain about how it will fit into the Western security architecture and what guarantees it will be given to ensure that Russia will not attack it again.
Earlier, Politico reported that discussions between Moscow and Washington are ongoing and have begun to intensify, according to Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov.
"There are indeed contacts between individual departments, and they have intensified recently. But I cannot tell you any other details, there is nothing else to say," Peskov told reporters on Wednesday, February 5.
Peskov was responding to a question about US President Donald Trump's statement that Washington is actively negotiating the war in Ukraine with both Kiev and Moscow.
