Belgium's new Foreign Minister Maxime Prevost has described US President Donald Trump's recent statements on the Gaza Strip as outrageous, Belgian news agency Belga reported.
Trump presented a plan to expel Palestinians from Gaza to other countries, seize the Gaza Strip and turn it into the "Riviera of the Middle East".
Prevost's rejection of Trump's plans is in line with the reactions of many of his colleagues from other EU countries.
The French Foreign Ministry, which strongly opposes any forced displacement of Palestinians in Gaza, for example, said that the future of Gaza is linked to the "future Palestinian state", not to control by a third country. A French government spokeswoman also described Trump's statements as "dangerous for regional stability and the peace process."
Germany also believes that Gaza belongs to the Palestinians and, like the West Bank, East Jerusalem should be part of a future Palestinian state. "The civilian population of Gaza should not be expelled and Gaza should not be occupied for a long period of time or recolonized", said German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock.
Her Italian counterpart, Antonio Tajani, reiterated his country's position: "We support the two-state solution and are even ready to send Italian soldiers to unite Gaza and the West Bank." Spain also believes that Gazans belong in the enclave and should be allowed to remain there.
Dutch Foreign Minister Kaspar Veldkamp opposed deporting Palestinians from Gaza, but the leader of the largest ruling party, Geert Wilders, supported Trump's plan.
