The Hungarian Parliament will continue to support its “southern and eastern“ neighbours in the process of European Union enlargement, said Parliament Speaker László Köver, BTA reports. He stressed that the recently concluded Hungarian EU presidency was focused on ensuring objectivity and merit in the enlargement of the union.
Köver noted that the Hungarian presidency had managed to resume processes that had been frozen for two and a half years, with particular attention to Albania, Montenegro and Serbia. Among Hungary's achievements in the second half of 2024 is the Budapest Declaration, which aims to improve the EU's competitiveness.
He also stressed the importance of Romania and Bulgaria's full membership in Schengen, defining this as the completion of a process that lasted over ten years.
The next meeting of the speakers of the parliaments of the EU countries will be held in Budapest on May 11-12, with the main topic being the national sovereignty of European countries and the identity of nations as a factor for competitiveness in the global economy.
