The Hungarian government has published on its website a ballot that will be used in a national referendum on Ukraine's accession to the EU.
The document contains the question: “Do you support Ukraine's membership in the European Union?“ There are two possible answers to this question: "yes" or "no". The ballot is printed on special paper protected from forgery, and voting in the referendum, which will be held as soon as possible, will be held under strict control.
“Ukraine cannot become a member of the EU without the consent of the Hungarians, here the member states have the right of veto“, the Hungarian government warned. It hopes to use the referendum results in upcoming consultations with EU leaders.
Speaking in Budapest on March 15 to mark the national holiday, the Day of the Revolution of 1848, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said that Hungary objects to the hasty admission of Ukraine to the community. According to him, Brussels promises Kiev accelerated admission to the EU, demanding in return that it continue military operations.
Earlier, the Hungarian government has repeatedly warned that the immediate accession of Ukraine to the EU would cause irreparable damage to the European economy. In addition, Budapest believes that the Ukrainian authorities have not restored the rights of the Hungarian minority in Transcarpathia and have not stopped actions that threaten the energy security of Central Europe. Budapest put forward these requirements when discussing the issues of Kiev's integration into European structures. At the same time, Orban noted that in the future he allows the possibility of Ukraine being accepted into the EU if it meets all the requirements for accession candidates.
