The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has adopted a law that allows the purchase of two Russian reactors, originally purchased by Bulgaria for the Belene NPP construction project, BTA reports.
These reactors will be used to expand the Ukrainian Khmelnytskyi NPP, Ukrinform reports, citing MP Yaroslav Zheleznyak.
In January of this year, the Energy and Housing and Communal Services Committee of the Ukrainian Parliament supported the proposal to purchase equipment necessary for the expansion of the Khmelnytskyi NPP. The reactors are planned to be installed in units 3 and 4 of the nuclear power plant.
The chairman of the committee, Andriy Gerus, stressed last month that it is recommended that the parliament adopt a resolution to "authorize the purchase of equipment necessary for the construction of units 3 and 4 of the Khmelnytskyi nuclear power plant."
Earlier this month, during a meeting with President Volodymyr Zelensky, Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiga and Energy Minister German Galushchenko, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi announced that they had discussed progress on Ukraine's plans to purchase equipment from the canceled project for the Bulgarian Belene nuclear power plant.
Grossi said the agency would provide technical support and nuclear safety advice on plans for new nuclear reactors at the Khmelnytskyi nuclear power plant, and during his visit in Kyiv last week expressed readiness to cooperate.
