The chairman of the Munich Security Conference (MSC), Christoph Heusgen, said today that there was no information about the presence of a Russian delegation at the event, in response to comments by US President Donald Trump that there could be a high-level meeting with high-ranking Russian representatives in Munich, DPA reported.
Heusgen, a former German diplomat who now chairs the annual meeting of world leaders, told German public broadcaster AER that he “knows nothing” for representatives of the Russian government to travel to Munich.
“There will be a few Russians, but they are opposition politicians“, he specified.
Yesterday, Trump told reporters that “Russia will be there to meet with our people in Munich“. He added that Ukraine has also been invited.
“I'm not sure exactly who will be there from each side, but (there will be) high-ranking people from Russia, Ukraine and the United States“, Trump added.
According to Heusgen and other organizers of the ISS, however, the Russian government has not been invited to send representatives at all.
“We know that no visas were requested or issued by the German government. So we don't know anything about that“, Heusgen said. "There will certainly not be such a meeting held within the framework of the Munich Security Conference here at the Bayerischer Hof Hotel," he added.
