US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has told European politicians that the administration of President Donald Trump will maintain sanctions against Russia until an agreement is reached to end the war in Ukraine, Bloomberg revealed. The media outlet cited its sources.
According to the newspaper's interlocutors, Rubio mentioned this in a telephone conversation with a group of European officials on Tuesday - after the meeting of the American and Russian delegations in Saudi Arabia.
As the agency writes, this may "bring some relief to European allies".
"Many of the sanctions against Russia were imposed in coordination with European allies. The US decision to lift the restrictions early would deal a serious blow to Europe's efforts to deprive Putin of the money needed to finance his military machine," the agency wrote.
The State Department declined to comment on Marco Rubio's words about the sanctions, notes "Bloomberg".
