The Member States of the European Union have agreed on a new package of sanctions against Russia in connection with its ongoing aggressive war against Ukraine.
The package will enter into force on the third anniversary of the invasion, February 24, announced the Polish presidency of the Council of the EU in Brussels after a decision was taken by the Committee of Permanent Representatives of the Member States.
The new punitive measures include a ban on the import of Russian aluminum. In addition, 73 more ships from the so-called Russian Navy in the Shadow.
The ships are of unclear ownership, and many of them are not insured, including threatening environmental safety, as there are suspicions that the tankers are old and poorly maintained. The cargo vessels with difficult-to-trace ownership are used to circumvent Western price caps on Russian oil exports to third countries or to transport grain stolen from Ukraine. There are also concerns that they have been or could be used for sabotage in the Baltic and North Seas.
This is the 16th package of EU sanctions against Russia.
