US President Donald Trump said that the United States has "almost resumed" intelligence sharing with Ukraine, Reuters reports. Trump's statement came after a question about whether he was considering restoring intelligence cooperation. The answer is: "We almost did it. So-so."
The cessation of intelligence sharing with Kiev sharply reduces the ability of the Ukrainian army to defend its areas from Russian missile strikes. The suspension followed the abrupt end of US military aid last Sunday.
The president also expressed his expectations for good results from the upcoming talks between US and Ukrainian officials in Saudi Arabia.
"I believe we will make great progress this week."
The meeting between the Ukrainian and US delegations in Saudi Arabia is scheduled for Tuesday. According to the requests, the US representatives want to clarify whether Kiev is ready to make concessions through Russia in the name of ending the war. The US delegation will also "watch for signs" whether the Ukrainians are serious about improving relations with the administration of US President Donald Trump after the staging in the Oval Office of the White House during the visit of Volodymyr Zelensky.
The US delegation will be led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio. He is expected to be joined by Trump's national security adviser Mike Walz and special envoy for the Middle East Steve Witkoff.
"You can't say "I want peace" and "I refuse to compromise", a US official told Reuters. According to him, the US delegation wants to see if the Ukrainians are interested in "not just peace" but in "realistic peace". Another source at the agency added that there is a difference between being interested only in borders and in 2014 or 2022.
Today, President Volodymyr Zelensky is visiting Saudi Arabia and will hold a meeting with Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
