The head of Ukrainian military intelligence, Kyrylo Budanov, said that a ceasefire with Russia could be achieved by the end of the year, Reuters reported, citing his statement on YouTube, BTA reports.
"I think it will happen. Most of the elements for this are present," Budanov said, without going into details.
However, Ukrainian authorities have largely rejected the possibility of a ceasefire, warning that it would allow Russia to rearm and prepare for new aggression.
"How long it will last and how effective it will be - that's another question," Budanov added.
Trump's influence and Kiev's concerns
Speculation about a cessation of hostilities has intensified since Donald Trump returned to the White House for a second term and promised a quick end to the war.
Events escalated after Trump held a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin a week ago. The diplomatic move has raised serious concerns in Kiev and European capitals, where there are fears that Washington and Moscow could reach an agreement that does not take into account the interests of Ukraine and Europe.
Ukrainian and Western leaders fear that such a deal could reward Russia for its invasion and leave Putin open to future threats against Ukraine or other countries.
