Belgian counterintelligence has been the target of a large-scale cyberattack carried out by hackers linked to China, local media reported, BTA reports.
According to the investigation, 10% of the emails received or sent by the service were intercepted between 2021 and 2023.
Although the internal server for storing confidential documents was not compromised, there are suspicions that sensitive data related to counterintelligence employees was leaked. Belgian authorities have not yet determined the exact extent of the damage and have urged affected employees to change their personal documents.
According to media reports, this is considered the biggest breakthrough in the history of Belgian counter-espionage services. Counterintelligence confirmed that a complaint has been filed with the prosecutor's office against an unknown perpetrator.
