Trump announces by decree that English becomes an official language in the US - 1

US President Donald Trump signed a decree that makes English an official language in the US, Agence France-Presse reported, quoted by BTA.

"It is in America's interest to designate a single official language". The aim of this step is "to promote unity and form a common American culture for all citizens" of the country, the text states.

Until now, there was no language recognized as official in the US. The decree signed by Trump repeals, among other things, a text signed in 2000. by then-President Bill Clinton, which aimed to increase access to public services for "limited English-speaking individuals".

Federal agencies will no longer be required to provide services in languages other than English, although they will still have the right to do so.

The issue of recognizing an official language in the United States is an old topic in the country's political life. Over the past century, there have been numerous bills on this issue, but attempts to pass them in Congress have been unsuccessful.

Statistics from the Census Bureau for 2023 show that 43 million people in the United States speak Spanish at home.
