Belgium is ready to send peacekeeping forces to Ukraine, said Foreign Minister Maxim Prevost, quoted by local media. He specified that he did not rule out the possibility of sending troops, but stressed that this can only happen after reaching a peace agreement, BTA reports.
“The agreement must take into account the interests of Ukrainians and Europeans, and not be at their expense“, added Prevost. He stressed that only under these conditions can peace be lasting and acceptable to all parties.
The minister also announced that the new Belgian government plans to increase the defense budget to two percent of GDP this summer. A month ago, Belgian authorities set a goal of reaching these values only in 2029, but due to the exceptional circumstances, exceptional measures will be taken.
Prévost stressed that Belgium will use all the opportunities provided by the European Commission's proposal for EU rearmament.
