US President Donald Trump wants to quickly end the war in Ukraine, which Vladimir Putin started three years ago, but peace is not Trump's main motive, writes The Wall Street Journal.
It has been more than three years since Vladimir Putin ordered Russian troops to invade Ukraine. Since Donald Trump took office, speculation about an end to the war has increased, as the Republican promised that he could end the war in Ukraine within 24 hours, but so far the Republican has not backed up his words with action.
But perhaps a quick end to the war in Ukraine is not Donald Trump's real motive. The Wall Street Journal claims that the US president is fighting for the favor of Russian President Vladimir Putin for other reasons. Rather, Trump wants to drive a wedge between Moscow and Beijing by rapprochement with Russia, since the United States sees the alliance between China and Russia as a major threat.
Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine and the related sanctions against Russia, Vladimir Putin has increasingly turned to China. In this context, the American newspaper writes that Trump wants to stop the rapprochement between Beijing and Moscow.
According to US government representatives, Donald Trump is pushing for a quick end to the war in Ukraine in order to weaken the Russian-Chinese alliance and the ties between the Kremlin and countries such as North Korea and Iran. These alliances were also strengthened by the war in Ukraine through arms supplies and troop deployments.
However, experts doubt that Trump's plan will succeed. The likelihood of it succeeding in the foreseeable future is negligible. China's role as a great power and China's importance to Russia continue to grow.
Meanwhile, the “Reuters“ agency reported that the suspension of US arms supplies is a blow to Ukraine, but for now it can continue to fight. Washington's decision to freeze its military aid will not lead to a sudden collapse of Ukrainian defense lines, but it could have a real impact on the war within a few months, specifically by weakening its air defenses and its capacity to deliver precision strikes.
