Canada could potentially use oil and gas exports as a tool in negotiations if the dispute with the US over tariffs imposed on Canadian exports escalates, the North American country's Foreign Minister Melanie Joly said, quoted by Reuters, BTA reported.
Canada is threatening to impose tariffs on US imports worth about 155 billion Canadian dollars ($108 billion), but has not yet talked about reducing exports to the US. Canada exports about four million barrels of oil to the US every day, about 90% of its exports of the raw material.
„Of course, it's about oil and gas. We have not yet put this on the table, but we keep it on our cards – cards that we could potentially play if things escalate. The US knows that“, said Joly.
Earlier, the authorities in the Canadian province of Alberta, which plays a major role in Canadian energy exports, said they would never accept the idea of reducing exports to the US.
