Last week, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced that Washington had approved his appointment during a meeting between Russian and American officials in Turkey.
Darchiev is a long-time diplomat who served two long terms at the Russian Embassy in Washington and was ambassador to Canada from 2014 to 2021. He currently heads the North America Department at the Russian Foreign Ministry.
