The groups in the European Parliament expressed support for the intentions to strengthen European defense, spokesmen for the various parliamentary forces announced at a press conference in Brussels, BTA reports.
Only the group “Europe of Sovereign Nations“ was not represented and did not state a position on the issue.
Representatives of the European People's Party (EPP) emphasized that they have been calling for strengthening the EU's defense capacity for years. The Socialists and Democrats welcomed the readiness for rearmament. The group “Patriots for Europe“ insisted that member states have a more direct role in decision-making in this area. They also expressed appreciation for the US efforts for peace in Ukraine, stressing that any solution must be lasting and fair.
European conservatives and reformists gave their strong support to the EU's initiatives in the field of defence. The "Renew Europe" and "Greens" groups also supported these measures, while the Left insisted that the European Parliament should not be excluded from decisions related to the allocation of European defence funds and the achievement of a sustainable peace in Ukraine.
On Tuesday, MEPs are expected to discuss the results of the extraordinary meeting of the European Council, which discussed the increase in defence spending and the continuation of support for Kiev.
On Wednesday, a vote will be held on a resolution calling on the EU to maintain its strong support for Ukraine. The same day, the possibilities of using the Russian assets seized as a result of the sanctions in favor of Kiev, as well as measures to accelerate the cessation of energy supplies from Russia, will be considered.
On Tuesday, the European Commission will present proposals for changes to the rules for the return of migrants without the right to stay in the EU. On the same day, MEPs will also discuss options for supporting European car manufacturers.
