Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has appointed Alexander Turchin as the new prime minister, DPA reported, BTA reports.

“As I promised, the country will be led by a new generation of politicians“, the 70-year-old head of state said, after dismissing a number of ministers in recent days.

Before his new appointment, 49-year-old Turchin was chairman of the Minsk Regional Executive Committee, and before that he held the post of deputy prime minister.

The current prime minister, Roman Golovchenko, is taking over the leadership of the Belarusian Central Bank. Lukashenko stressed that the move fulfills Golovchenko's desire for the banking sector to play a greater role in the country's economy.

Lukashenko, who has ruled Belarus since 1994, won 86% of the vote in January's presidential election, according to official figures. However, the vote was held without the presence of independent observers.
