Israel is actively encouraging UN agencies and charities to take over the work of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) in the Gaza Strip, Israel's ambassador to the UN said, quoted by Reuters, BTA reports.
The decision comes after Israel banned the agency from operating on Israeli territory in January this year.
“We, the State of Israel, are working to find a replacement for the work of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in Gaza“, Daniel Meron, Israel's ambassador to the UN in Geneva, told reporters.
He declined to provide details, but added that Israel “encourages UN agencies and NGOs“ to take responsibility in specialized areas of work.
