Supporters of the far-right presidential candidate Calin Georgescu gathered in front of the Constitutional Court of Romania this evening, reports the TV “Digi 24“, BTA reports.
Dozens of demonstrators are in the area of the parliament, where the court building is also located, a day after the Central Electoral Bureau refused to register Georgescu's candidacy for participation in the repeat presidential elections in May. The Constitutional Court will consider an appeal against this decision tomorrow and is expected to rule within 48 hours.
The protesters chanted “Calin Georgescu - president!“, “Down with the government!“, “Freedom!“ and “Colaku and his men – traitors to the people!“. As in previous demonstrations, they waved the Romanian national flag.
A gendarmerie cordon has been set up for security at the site, “Digi 24“ also reports.
Last night, after the news of Georgescu's rejection, riots broke out in front of the Central Electoral Bureau building and later in the center of the Old Town.
The Romanian police announced today that 13 gendarmerie officers were injured, four of whom were hospitalized. Over 500 people were checked and seven were arrested.
