Taiwanese President William Lai said on Monday that China has stepped up its campaign of influence and infiltration on the island, Reuters reported, quoted by BTA.
He stressed that his government would propose a series of measures aimed at countering Beijing's efforts to "swallow" Taiwan - a self-governing island that China considers a breakaway province.
After meeting with senior security officials, Lai told reporters that Beijing is trying to influence various layers of Taiwanese society. These include organized crime groups, media representatives, as well as military and police officers.
"We will take decisive steps to protect our democracy and national security," Lai said, stressing that the government is ready to oppose any attempts at destabilization by China.
