Russian military intelligence behind IKEA store arson - 1

Russian military intelligence is behind the arson of an IKEA store in Vilnius in May last year, and one of the suspects in the case is in custody in Poland along with others linked to similar crimes, Reuters reported, citing Lithuanian prosecutors, BTA reported.

According to representatives of Western countries, cases of sabotage in Europe have increased in recent years, with people allegedly paid by Russia being behind the crimes. Moscow denies any involvement in the crimes, Reuters reports.

Lithuania's investigation has shown that Russia was linked to the IKEA arson attack through a long chain of intermediaries, said Artuas Urbelis, a prosecutor at Lithuania's prosecutor general's office.

"This has to do with military intelligence, with security services," he told reporters. The attack is believed to have been carried out by two Ukrainian citizens, one of whom was a minor, the prosecutor said, noting that the crime was being treated as a case of terrorism. The other suspect was arrested in Lithuania shortly after the arson attack, he added.
