France and Canada are forces of peace and demand clear commitments from Russia to achieve lasting peace. This was stated by French President Emmanuel Macron during a meeting with the new Prime Minister of Canada, Mark Carney, held at the Elysee Palace, Agence France-Presse reported, quoted by BTA.
Macron stressed that France and Canada are reliable allies, not only as part of NATO, but also within their bilateral relations.
“Canada and France want a lasting and solid peace, accompanied by stable guarantees that will protect Ukraine from new Russian aggression and ensure the security of all of Europe“, Macron said.
“In this spirit, we will continue to support Ukraine's security and insist that Russia make clear commitments“, the French president added.
For his part, Mark Carney expressed his desire to strengthen Canada's ties with reliable allies like France. He stressed that both he and Macron remain firmly committed to supporting Ukraine's sovereignty and security.
Aside from the topic of Ukraine, Macron said that free and fair trade, based on international rules, is a more effective tool for prosperity than tariffs. He expressed confidence that the Canadian prime minister shares this position.
This is Carney's first visit abroad since he was sworn in as prime minister last week, replacing Justin Trudeau. After his visit to Paris, Carney will travel to the UK.
In this context, agencies recall that former US President Donald Trump introduced tariffs on aluminum and steel, threatening Canada and the European Union with additional tariffs, including on French wine and champagne.
