Hungary is the only country in the European Union that openly opposes the accelerated accession of Ukraine to the community, but behind the scenes, other EU members also speak out in support of this position. This was announced by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who is participating in the EU summit in Brussels.
"When we have to speak frankly and honestly, only Hungary is against Ukraine's membership in the EU, but behind the scenes there are more of us. Well, sooner or later this voice will reach the boardroom from behind the scenes," the Prime Minister said in an interview with the news portal "Patriot".
He confirmed that he will declare at the Brussels summit against the accelerated accession of Ukraine to the European Union. According to him, a referendum will be held in Hungary on this issue, on the basis of which Budapest will develop its position and bring it to the attention of Brussels. After that, the discussion can continue, Orban believes.
In recent days, he has repeatedly warned that Hungary will not allow Ukraine to immediately join the EU, as this would cause irreparable damage to the European economy. In addition, Budapest believes that the Ukrainian authorities have not restored the rights of the Hungarian minority in Transcarpathia and have not stopped actions that threaten the energy security of Central Europe. Budapest set these requirements when discussing the issues of Kiev's integration into European structures. At the same time, Orban noted that in the future he allows the possibility of Ukraine being accepted into the EU if it meets all the requirements for accession candidates.
