The negotiating teams of the European Parliament and the Council of the EU have reached an agreement according to which the penalties imposed on drivers for driving at speed, after drinking or using drugs, as well as for causing an accident or death, will apply throughout the European Union, BNR reported, quoted by News.bg.
Currently, the penalties apply only in the territory of the country in which the violation was committed.
The new agreement provides that the country that issued the driving license will be notified of its withdrawal for three months or more, as well as of the restrictions imposed in connection with the violation. The country that issued the document will inform all other EU member states so that they can also apply the measures to the offending driver.
The EU member states that imposed the penalty will have 20 working days to inform the sanctioned driver of the measures taken against him and of the procedures for appealing against them.
However, if the country that issued the driving licence considers that the right to be heard of the sanctioned driver has been violated, it may decide not to apply the penalty to him.
