Istanbul's opposition-run municipal council has elected an interim mayor to run the city, Reuters reported.
The move comes after Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu was arrested awaiting trial on corruption charges that he and his supporters deny as politically motivated.
Last week's detention of Imamoglu, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's most vocal political opponent, sparked the biggest anti-government protests in more than a decade and led to mass arrests as hundreds of thousands took to the streets across the country in mostly peaceful demonstrations.
The 314-member municipal council, in which the main opposition party has majority, elected Nuri Aslan to govern Istanbul with 177 votes.
The interim mayor will govern the city until the end of Imamoglu's term as he awaits trial.
