Five people died in a tragic accident today in a mine in the Spanish region of Asturias, BNR reported.

Four injured in the explosion, two with serious burns.

The main version of the investigators is a gas leak explosion.

The tragedy occurred in an old coal mine, for which a permit was issued months ago to search for a production alternative. The Asturian government explained that the company that received the license was carrying out work related to the possible use of the mineral for the production of graphite.

The main hypothesis that investigators are working on is that the accident was caused by an explosion of slag gas, the detection of which is usually done using devices that are not always effective.

Labor Minister Yolanda Díaz visited the scene of the tragedy and promised that those responsible will be held accountable.

Years ago, the mine was a major economic pillar for southwestern Asturias. During its operation, many people worked there and it was an incentive for the creation of more businesses in the area.

The last incident there was in 2015, when a 40-year-old worker died after a tunnel collapsed.

The autonomous regions of Asturias and Castile and Leon have declared two days of mourning.
