More than 71 mm of rain fell on the island of Mykonos, causing severe flooding and significant damage in the areas of Tourlos and Marathi. In response, local authorities imposed a ban on the movement of all vehicles, except emergency services, ERT reported, News.bg reports.
The Civil Protection Service issued an emergency warning shortly before 7 p.m., prohibiting movement due to heavy rain and thunderstorms. "Travel is prohibited due to severe weather conditions," the official statement said.
Rescue teams responded to several cases of people trapped in the waters. "Everyone is safe", officials assured as emergency crews continued their work to clear flooded areas.
Situation also difficult on Paros
On the island of Paros, the storms caused widespread flooding, especially in Naoussa and Kolymbithres. Firefighters rescued two people trapped in cars and evacuated 13 others.
"The situation is particularly dire on the Parikia-Naoussa road," said Mayor Konstantinos Bizas, adding that the Naoussa River had overflowed and swept away cars. A complete ban on movement has also been imposed on the island as a result of the crisis.
Schools closed and warnings for other regions
Schools on the island of Rhodes will remain closed on Tuesday as a precaution against expected severe weather conditions, Mayor Alexandros Koliadis announced.
Bad weather warnings have also been issued for the islands of Samos, Chios, Ikaria and Thassos, as well as for Central Greece, Thessaly, Halkidiki, East Macedonia and Thrace, where significant rainfall has also been recorded.
