European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen told the European Parliament in Strasbourg today that the EU is open to negotiations on the tariffs announced by the US, BTA reports.
She stressed that Europe has significant trump cards and will be in a strong position during the negotiations.
„Tariffs will affect people, fuel inflation, take away jobs and create a bureaucratic monster. Neither the US nor Europe needs this. We are ready to take decisive steps if necessary, anything is possible. Our first response will be unity and determination,” added Von der Leyen.
She noted that many Europeans feel discouraged by the US messages, but stressed that the EU will defend its interests and values. “We are looking for a negotiated solution, but if necessary, we will protect our citizens and businesses. This confrontation is not in anyone’s interest. It would be best to find a constructive solution, but we have a strong response plan if necessary, although we would not like to implement it,” concluded the European Commission President.
