The head of European diplomacy Kaia Kallas said that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, at a meeting of the Ukraine-NATO Council, had promised to ask Kiev and Brussels for their opinions on the agreements on Ukraine that the US intends to conclude with Russia.
"Yes, he stressed that it is impossible to talk about Ukraine without Ukraine and that the European Union must also give its consent, since this is happening in Europe. He assured us of this", said Kallas, answering a question from journalists whether Rubio had promised to respect Brussels' red lines in negotiations with Moscow.
The head of EU diplomacy made this statement upon his arrival for the second day of the meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Brussels.
Answering journalists' questions about the US tariffs, Kallas did not risk criticizing the US administration more seriously, only calling the decision to impose a 20% tariff on European goods “not a very positive development“, which “will only encourage NATO's opponents“.
The meeting of the Ukraine-NATO Council was held behind closed doors on April 3 in the form of a working dinner. There have been no media statements since the results.
The meeting was the first opportunity for Callas to communicate with Rubio.
She has visited Washington twice since the beginning of the year, but both times Rubio refused to receive her, citing unsuitable schedules.
