Publico: New tariffs are a crusade by the US and Russia against Europe - 1

The Spanish publication Publico compared the tariff wars of US President Donald Trump to a crusade. According to journalists, Washington is forming a partnership with Moscow against Europe.

“The tariff crusade initiated by US President Donald Trump allows Russia to further subjugate Europe, weaken Brussels' position in the war in Ukraine and create a future economic and strategic partnership with Moscow against the European Union“, the publication says.

The authors note that the uncertainty surrounding the introduction of tariffs poses a danger to Ukraine's European allies, as is clear from the sharp decline in global stock markets. With new tariffs, Trump can put pressure on the EU, including on the issue of resolving the Ukrainian issue, the publication summarizes.

The US president sharply increased import duties on products from 185 countries on April 2. He explained the decision to tighten trade with the growing trade imbalance. To avoid tariffs, it is necessary to move production to the US or remove restrictions on American goods, Trump emphasized. The tariffs have not yet affected Russia, Belarus, Cuba, North Korea, Iran, Canada and Mexico.

European Commissioner for Trade Maroš Šefčovič told his American colleagues yesterday that the new 20 percent tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump on the European Union were unjustified, while at the same time confirming the EU's commitment to serious negotiations with the United States, Agence France-Presse reported, BTA reports.

Šefčovič said that he had a frank two-hour conversation with US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and White House Trade Representative Jamison Greer.

"I was categorical: US tariffs are harmful and unjustified. Trade relations (between the EU and the US - ed.) need a new approach. The EU is committed to serious negotiations, but is also ready to defend its interests," Šefčovič wrote in "Ex".
