Supporters of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro gathered on April 6 for a rally in his support in Sao Paulo, reports „Reuters“, reports News.bg.
The demonstration took place days after Brazil's Supreme Court ruled that Bolsonaro will stand trial on charges of conspiracy against state power after his loss in the 2022 presidential election.
Bolsonaro himself called for participation in the event after joining a similar rally on Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro last month. Despite organizers' expectations, the turnout in São Paulo was lower.
No official figures on the number of participants have been released yet.
If found guilty, Bolsonaro could face a long effective sentence. The former president has already been barred from running in elections until 2030 by Brazil's Supreme Electoral Court for trying to undermine trust in the electoral system.
Bolsonaro has vehemently denied the charges, saying he had no intention of blocking the inauguration of his successor, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. He describes the prosecution as a political attack aimed at hindering his future participation in the 2026 presidential elections.
In addition, Bolsonaro is demanding an amnesty for all those convicted of participating in the storming of government buildings in Brazil on January 8, 2023.
