The European Union will have to buy energy from the United States to make up for the surplus it has in its trade with them, US President Donald Trump said, quoted by Agence France-Presse and BTA.
Trump told reporters at the White House that this would be a key focus of his administration in its efforts to eliminate the US trade deficit with the EU.
"The European Union has been very bad to us", assured the US president. He accused European countries of not buying enough American goods.
"They will have to buy their energy from us because they need it, and they will have to buy it from us", the US president said of the EU countries. He added that Washington "could make $350 billion in a week."
On Wednesday, Trump announced new tariffs on all imports into the United States, a move that hit traditional European Union partners. Yesterday, Brussels proposed retaliatory tariffs of 25% on a range of American goods.
