The indictment of the Turkish prosecutors provides for a prison sentence of one to seven years for the leader of the opposition Victory Party, Ümit Özdag, who has been arrested in Silivri prison for nearly three months, the Haberler news portal reported, BTA reported.
According to the indictment, the punishment requested for the opposition leader is for “inciting society to hatred and hostility or humiliation“ through the press and spreading allegations through a chain of publications in the media.
The indictment states that Özdag's publications regarding allegations that a Syrian migrant had abused a 5-year-old girl in the city of Kayseri caused mass protests to erupt.
It is also stated that the indictment includes data provided to the Chief Public Prosecutor's Office in Istanbul by the Directorate of Migration Management and the General Directorate of Legal Services of the Ministry of Interior, according to which 34 publications by Özdag on different dates and in different media regarding Syrian refugees and illegal migrants in Turkey were misleading and distorting.
