Israel and Turkey failed to reach an agreement to prevent tensions between them in Syria during talks between the two sides held in Azerbaijan, the Israeli state media Kan reported.
According to it, the negotiations, during which the Israeli and Turkish sides tried to agree on the creation of a mechanism to prevent conflicts between them in Syria, should continue after the end of the Jewish holiday of Passover, which this year falls between April 12 and 19.
Ankara did not even let the plane with the Israeli delegation return to the Jewish country via a route over the territory and it was forced to fly west from Turkey over the Black Sea.
On April 10, Netanyahu's office confirmed that direct negotiations were underway with representatives of Turkey in Azerbaijan. The Israeli side expressed gratitude to the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev for organizing the meeting. The Prime Minister's Office noted that during the meeting the parties "outlined their interests in the region", after which "it was agreed to continue the dialogue to maintain regional stability".
Relations between Israel and Turkey deteriorated sharply in light of the escalation of the conflict in the Gaza Strip, which began in 2023, and deteriorated further after the change of power in Syria, which occurred in late 2024.
On April 8, Netanyahu, summing up his second visit to Washington in two months, said that his country would oppose the establishment of Turkish military bases in Syria. At the same time, he admitted the possibility of US President Donald Trump mediating in resolving disputes between the Turkish and Israeli sides.
In turn, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said on April 9 that Ankara does not intend to enter into conflict with anyone, including Israel, on Syrian territory. At the same time, he called the actions of the Jewish state in relation to Syria, where the Israeli Air Force constantly strikes various military targets, "unacceptable". Fidan added that his country is cooperating with the new Syrian authorities on various issues, including security.
