An attack by armed herdsmen in Benue state in central Nigeria has killed more than 50 people, Agence France-Presse reported.
The governor's media adviser, Solomon Yorpew, said the latest figures put the death toll at 56. He said the number of victims could rise as search operations continue.
It was earlier reported that 17 people were killed in an attack in Nigeria, believed to have been carried out by armed herdsmen.
The incident took place on the night between Thursday and Friday and led to the deployment of security forces.
The local governor blamed the attack on an ethnic group of herdsmen, motivated in part by religious reasons.
Earlier, the motorcade of former Imo State Governor Ikedi Ohakim was attacked in southeastern Nigeria.
The gunmen tried to stop the convoy by opening fire on it, but the driver of the car carrying Ohakim and his children managed to escape the fire.
