India has imposed a temporary 12% duty on imports of some types of steel to curb a sharp increase in cheap supplies of this raw material, which come mainly from China, Reuters reported, BTA reported.
The influx of Chinese steel in recent years has forced some factories in India, the world's second-largest crude steel producer, to curtail their operations and cut jobs.
The Indian Finance Ministry published an order stating that the duty will remain in force for 200 days, starting Monday.
This is the first major change in Delhi's trade policy since US President Donald Trump imposed a wide range of tariffs on various countries in April, starting a fierce trade war with China, notes Reuters.
