Axios: Republicans mobilize after calls for Trump impeachment - 1

Advisors to US President Donald Trump are seriously considering the possibility of impeaching him if Democrats take over the House of Representatives next year, the Axios portal reported.

According to him, Trump, as the only American leader to be impeached twice, and his team are aware of how much this process could affect the White House and stop the president's agenda. The threat of another impeachment has motivated the US administration to quickly pass as many of the planned bills as possible before the 2026 midterm elections, the publication writes.

According to one of the White House advisers, John McLaughlin, the possibility of impeachment is a "strong call" to Republicans in the House of Representatives to put aside their differences and support Trump's economic platform, especially his plan to extend the 2017 tax cuts.

Democrat Congressman Sri Thanedar announced the start of impeachment proceedings against Trump. In his video address, he accused the head of state of violating the constitution and attempting to usurp power, urging his colleagues to support the initiative.

The congressman raised a total of seven charges. Trump has abused executive power, obstructed justice, threatened military intervention in sovereign states, and violated free speech by confronting his critics and the media. Thanedar accused the president of dictatorship, corruption, and the creation of "illegal agencies" such as the Office of Government Efficiency (DOGE) and "authorizing Elon Musk to unilaterally violate the Constitution."

Earlier, another Democratic congressman, Al Green, announced his plans to initiate impeachment proceedings against the president.

Currently, the Republican Party, which supports Trump, has a majority in both the Senate and the House of Representatives, making an impeachment attempt virtually impossible.

Trump is the first president in US history to be removed from office twice. Both cases were during his first term - in 2019 and 2021 - and were rejected in the Senate.

Impeachment, according to the US Constitution, provides for the removal from office of federal officials, including the president, if they are “convicted of treason, bribery, or other high crimes and misdemeanors“. The House of Representatives has the “exclusive power” to formulate and bring charges. Members of Congress can propose a vote to refer the matter to the House Judiciary Committee, which examines the charges. If their grounds are confirmed, an actual indictment is prepared.

After being approved by the committee, the document is sent to the full House of Representatives for consideration. Its approval requires a simple majority vote. If the decision is positive, the charges are transferred to the Senate, where the procedure becomes a trial. It is led by the Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court. The House of Representatives effectively acts as the prosecutor in the trial, and the senators are like members of the jury. For impeachment to be successful, at least two-thirds of the senators must vote.
