Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez ruled out on Monday that a surplus of electricity from renewable sources caused the massive blackout that hit the Iberian Peninsula yesterday, Reuters reported, quoted by BTA.
Sanchez told reporters that technicians were still trying to find the exact cause of the blackout and the results of their investigation would be used to strengthen the energy system.
"What happened yesterday will never happen again," he stressed.
Although a preliminary assessment by Spain's electricity transmission network operator (REE) ruled out a cyberattack, Sanchez said the country's cybersecurity authorities are conducting a separate investigation into such a possibility.
Pedro Sanchez added that he was setting up a commission to investigate the causes of the accident, Agence France-Presse reported.
Meanwhile, Spain's Supreme Court announced today that it would open an investigation into the power outage to determine whether a cyberattack on Spanish critical infrastructure could have caused the blackout across almost the entire Iberian peninsula.
If such a hypothesis is confirmed, Judge José Calama will investigate the accident as a terrorist crime, according to a court document.
